Le protoplasme comme modèle de « résistance » chez Nietzsche

Cet article étudie la mobilisation du « protoplasme » dans les textes de Nietzsche pour penser les rapports entre la fluidité héraclitéenne du devenir et la vie comme processus de résistance au flux par une création de « formes et de rythmes ». Loin d’être une figure de l’adaptation fluide et parfaite à un monde préexistant, le protoplasme permet d’interpréter au contraire toute vie comme une dynamique d’« incorporation », c’est-à-dire de mise en forme à partir de laquelle seulement émerge pour chaque être vivant ce que l’on peut appeler un « monde ». Sur le modèle du protoplasme, le corps vivant semble devoir se construire selon une double résistance : résistance au dangereux flux originel du devenir, d’une part, résistance au non moins dangereux flux de sollicitations d’une époque décadente, d’autre part.

This article examines Nietzsche's use of “protoplasm” in his texts to conceptualize the relationship between the Heraclitean fluidity of the world and life as a process of resistance to flux through the creation of “forms”. Far from being a figure of fluid and perfect adaptation to a pre-existing world, protoplasm allows us to interpret all life as a dynamic of “incorporation”—that is, a process of form-giving from which alone emerges what can be called a “world” for each living being. Nevertheless, the question arises of the socially constructed and learned nature of this incorporation, and the potential danger of this learning process. If the living body is entirely subjected to socially dominant forms, it will never become capable of creating its own forms. Following the model of protoplasm, the living body thus seems to require a dual resistance: resistance to the dangerous flux of the world on the one hand, and resistance to the gregarious sclerosis of social forms on the other.
