L’espace. Le sujet. Le langage. Dérive autour de quelques notes de Robert Smithson.

Partant de « Outline for Yale symposium : Against Absolute Categories » (Robert Smithson, 1968) cet article interroge le rapport, chez l’artiste américain, entre, d’une part, le langage et l’abstraction conceptuelle et, d’autre part, la corporéité et l’expérience phénoménologique de l’espace. En situant la démarche de Smithson dans le contexte artistique et théorique de la fin des années 1960, il s’agit d’insister sur les modalités selon lesquelles l’artiste déconstruit l’opposition entre l’intelligible et le sensible en revenant à son principe sous-jacent : le sujet. L’article se focalise sur la dialectique phénoménologique « je »/« ici » dans le but de démontrer l’abstraction inévitable qui s’infiltre dans tout processus d’auto-localisation du corps dans l’espace. En ce sens les non-sites de Smithson se donnent comme autant d’interstices marquant la discontinuité entre le « je » et l’« ici », des lieux négatifs d’où manque le centre autour duquel l’espace positif est structuré, à savoir le sujet tel qu’il est défini et vécu à l’intérieur du système perspectif.

Taking as its starting point "Outline for Yale symposium: Against Absolute Categories" (Robert Smithson, 1968), this article addresses the relationship, in the artist’s work, between language and conceptual abstraction, on the one hand, and corporeity and the phenomenological experience of space, on the other hand. By putting Smithson’s enterprise in the artistic and theoretical context of the late 60s, we wish to insist on the mechanisms through which Smithson deconstructs the opposition between sensibility and intelligibility, thereby returning to its underlying principle: the subject. Leaning on a close reading of Smithson’s writings, the article focuses on the phenomenological dialectics "I" / "Here" in order to demonstrate the inevitable abstraction which infiltrates the very process of self-localisation of the body within space. In this sense Smithson’s non-sites appear to be the markers of the discontinuity between "I" and "Here", negative places lacking the centre around which positive space can be constructed, i. e. the self-centred subject as it is defined and lived within the perspective system.
