Mise au point par le sociologue Harold Garfinkel dans les années 50, la provocation expérimentale consiste à rompre une situation familière en adoptant une attitude inattendue, incertaine et ambiguë. C’est un moyen de faire jour sur l’arrière-plan structurel de la réalité sociale. Appliquée à l’art, cette pratique ouvre un champ d’analyse empirique de la perturbation. Avec l’exemple d’une expérience artistique récente, nous en analyserons les mécanismes à l’aide des recherches issues de la phénoménologie sociale. De quelle façon la provocation expérimentale exerce-t-elle une menace sur la réalité sociale ? Dans quelle mesure donne-t-elle de l’intérêt à une démarche critique tournée vers la compréhension du monde au sein duquel elle est produite ?

Initiated by the sociologist Harold Garfinkel during the fifties, the experimental provocation consists in break with a familiar situation, in having a unexpected, uncertain and ambiguous attitude. It is a way to enlighten the structural back-ground of the social reality. In art, this practice open an empirical analysis of the perturbation field. Taking example of a recently artistic experience, we will analyze mechanisms with the help of researches from social phenomenology. How does experimental provocation operates a threat to the social reality ? To what extent she gives interest to a critical oriented approach for understanding the world in which it is produced ?
